The Merchant Marine Academy of Macedonia, Greece was founded in 1969 and initially operated as a School of Engineering.
Since 1973 it has been operating in its current facilities on a plot of 40 acres and 10,000m² of covered areas.
In 1975 the School of Deck officers also started operating.
It is located 32 km from Thessaloniki, approximately 500 meters from the Municipality of Nea Michaniona.
The School of Rescue and Fire Fighting Equipment also operates within the facilities.
The Academy has won its participation in 10 European research programs with 100% funding from the European Union. In 2002, the Academy undertook action to promote the Greek Merchant Shipping, Maritime Education and the Merchant Marine Officer profession in Northern Greece with the ultimate aim of attracting young people to the Maritime Profession. As part of this action, information material was sent to 150 secondary educational institutions in the Prefecture of Thessaloniki and an information day for vocational guidance counselors in secondary education was successfully organized, and as a result, presentations are made to this day at vocational guidance days in schools.
Graduates of the School of Engineering obtain a Third Level of Education degree and at the same time the diploma of Third Class Officer, Merchant Marine Engineer.
They can also pursue postgraduate studies at Schools in Greece and abroad in specialties that are necessary in the field of Shipping. A career in Shipping is not limited to ships. Many other sectors of economic activity operate around them, such as shipping companies, shipbuilding, repairs, supplies, agencies, classification societies, insurance, similar Public and private Organizations, etc.
These offer alternative employment opportunities and substantial development prospects, depending on the will and ambition of each individual. With the knowledge and experience that the Officer acquires when serving on ships, he has all the essential prerequisites that allow him to pursue a career later on land. Many senior and top executives, currently employed in the above sectors, come from the ranks of Merchant Navy Officers.
